Evans Hall "Stop The War" Chalking, April 2003.

Planning in the office, after having looked around from Memorial Glade, we discuss the geometry of the rappel. We decide the positions of anchors, the placement of the writing, and start organising who'll be handling each task once we get started.

Early in the afternoon we hadn't had the chalk we needed, but happily we'd found plenty by now.

Before starting, we prepare all the equipment -- headlamps, harnesses, slings and 'biners for anchors, two-way radios, and ropes flaked in bags.

Everyone is ready, so it's time to start, at about 2:30am

We run through technique on the balcony before starting, using autoblocks to control and stop the rappel at the desired height.

Quickly jumaring up and over the top of the roof, we're under way. It's a long shot that any will notice this part, but it's one of our more vulnerable moments, so it's worth doing fast. Once up, the elevator room door can be opened, so others can come up from inside the north stair well.

Finally, we set up anchors on the rooftop, for three parallel rappels. While three people rappel, another person stays at the top to break down the anchors. Another two people are out on Memorial Glade, keeping a lookout and reporting on progress. The radios work pretty well, after a few moments of confusion. It doesn't take long to do what we came for - in about 15 minutes after the rappelling starts, everyone is down, the anchors have been packed away, and the writing is on the wall.

We came back the next day to take some photos; I think they turned out pretty well :-)

Now we have our eyes on bigger things :-)
